McCAIN Foods GB has issued an immediate recall for 19,000 freezer staples that should never have been sold in the UK.
There is a risk of the potential presence of UK-specific allergens (mustard and celery) and ethylene oxide – used to preserve product seasoning.
An error in the compliance check process meant they had not been thoroughly assessed for the UK market
The frozen food giants had imported the products from India as part of a small UK market trial.
However, an error in the compliance check process meant they had not been thoroughly assessed for the UK market.
McCain claims customers purchased at least 18,671 items before removing them from the shelves.
The company withdrew over 24,000 packs from the market.
The recall applies to all batch codes and “best before” dates for the products.
No other McCain items were affected.
A spokesperson for the frozen food giants said: “We take the safety and wellbeing of our customers extremely seriously and are recalling these products out of an abundance of caution.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
If any customers have bought any recalled items, McCain has urged them not to eat.
They should return the product to the store they purchased it from for a full refund – with no receipt needed.
It comes after another urgent recall alert was issued for a popular dinner item over health fears.
A batch of Roma Formaggio da Pasta has been pulled from stores due to the possible presence of mould.
The affected item has a best-before date of March 21, 2025.
It originated in the Netherlands and has a pack size of 80g.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said: “The above batch of Roma Formaggio da Pasta is being recalled due to the possible presence of mould.
“Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.
“Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, caterers & retailers:
Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.
“Wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batch and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers.
“Consumers are advised not to eat the affected batch.”
