ENTERPRISE, Ala (WDHN) — A suspect in the 2021 murder of an Enterprise teenager has received a short prison sentence in exchange for testifying against his alleged co-conspirator.
On Wednesday, Deandre Flowers was sentenced to serve three years in an Alabama prison, followed by 48 months of supervised probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Flowers was charged in the 2021 fatal shooting of 15-year-old Myquell Smith.
Enterprise Police told WDHN in 2021 that Smith was sitting in a car near the Boll Weevil statue in downtown Enterprise when a bullet went through the vehicle and hit him in the chest, killing him.
Previous reports show Flowers was initially facing a murder charge, but that changed in the summer of 2023 when his charge was reduced to manslaughter after ballistic experts came to believe the bullet was not fired from Flower’s gun but from the gun of his alleged co-conspirator Fredrick Wilder Jr.
As part of Flower’s plea deal, he must testify against Wilder Jr. in his upcoming jury trial.
Court documents reveal that if Flowers refuses to testify, his plea deal will be revoked.
After Flower’s release from the Alabama Department of Corrections, he must undergo anger management education and drug rehabilitation.
